The Virtue of leadership often has to go through a big list of barriers and challenges within an individual’s life and there are times when this big adrenaline rush goes to bay in the wake of our hectic life and daily schedules. A leader may have to play numerous roles in his daily life but only the perfect one can still take some good time out of his busy routine while imparting the same skill set to his subordinates. Coaching is quite different from training and mentoring but there are still some of us who use these words interchangeably. All these years I have worked with people from all walks of life and that’s how I get to know about the difference between training and coaching.
1. Coaching is a continuous process and cannot be executed whilst keeping a single goal in mind Whilst training is a time bound activity which gets concluded once the desired result is achieved. Coaching comes over as an ongoing process where one targets the existing members of the team which are competent enough but haven’t been able to use their potential to its fullest. 2. Coaching is not aimed towards fulfilling a target, but to support someone on enhancing his competencies instead If you know about the exiting potentials of your team members, you must know that very individual comes with some unique qualities altogether. That’s where a good leader comes into picture whilst bringing all those qualities in the right use. 3. Coaching is all about bringing people out of their comfort zones and making them achieve the best out of their potential When we talk about training, it generally comes as a theoretical or conceptual approach towards the achievement of desired result whereas Coaching is all about applying individual skills and knowledge to work without following a predefined approach. 4. Training comes with a short-lived impact whilst skills and knowledge imparted via Coaching lasts forever Training would only make a certain group of people skilled for a certain task as per the given rules and theories and that’s why its impact is limited to the execution of that particular task only. On the other side, Coaching transforms the skill set and capabilities of people for a longer duration and same stay with them for the rest of their lives most of the time. 5. Coaching is based on observation and skill-set whilst training is all about methodologies Coaching comes on board out of sheer experience and expertise whilst training is mostly about implications of pre-existing methodologies.
